The Dietrich von Hildebrand Legacy Project
Announces Internship Openings

What We Are Looking For:

The Dietrich von Hildebrand Legacy Project is seeking to fill multiple paid internships to provide crucial support for ongoing staff projects. Internships begin immediately and last until the end of the 2009/10 academic year. Interns will collaborate remotely by working 10-15 hrs/wk from their already established locations.

Beginning in the fall of 2009 and throughout the spring of 2010, the Hildebrand Project will dedicate significant resources to the creation of a major Internet presence for the writings of Dietrich von Hildebrand. This resource will create a meeting place for scholars around the world interested in von Hildebrand’s thought and enhance our ability to reach audiences not familiar with his work already. The Hildebrand Project will also undertake various promotional efforts to raise awareness of its English translations of von Hildebrand’s writings.

The Hildebrand Project is looking for motivated young academics with a passion for philosophical inquiry, an interest in 20th century Christian intellectual history, and a sense for the essential role that philosophy can play in the rebirth and renewal of culture to assist in these projects. Academics with an interest in Christian personalism and a prior knowledge of 20th century Christian philosophers are especially encouraged to apply.

The Internet resource will be launched in conjunction with a major international conference the Hildebrand Project is hosting in May of 2010 in Rome. The theme of the conference will center on the newly released translation of von Hilebrand’s opus magnum, The Nature of Love. Confirmed speakers include: Metropolitan John Zizioulas, Michael Waldstein, Rocco Buttiglione, Fr. Charles Morerod, OP, Josef Seifert, Michael Novak, and Joseph Bottum.

What’s In It For You:

An internship with the Hildebrand Project provides opportunities rarely available to the up-and-coming academic. These include:
  • The chance to play a part in bringing about a worldwide renaissance of interest in Dietrich von Hildebrand.
  • The chance to play a vital role in making known the forgotten philosophical and political legacy of a heroic 20th century Christian intellectual.
  • The chance to handle rare and historic materials related to the Hildebrand legacy, including handwritten documents, letters, manuscripts, and original photographs.
  • The chance to interact with leading philosophers and theologians associated with the Hildebrand Project.
  • The chance to be involved with an organization that shapes the way philanthropy supports philosophical and theological scholarship.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Strategic followup with reviewers will also be undertaken in order to obtain referrals, either to other possible reviewers or to develop relationships with magazines/journals not on our list. We are also interested in obtaining referrals to students and other scholars they think would be interested in our work in order to expand our network for possible future collaboration, attendance at our events, etc. A letter/email campaign structure will be established for handling contact and ongoing cultivation of these referrals. Relationships will be tracked in our online database.
  • Skill Sets: Ability to manage a diverse set of time lines and correspondence. Good networking skills.

—Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

On Dietrich von Hildebrand’s doctoral dissertation: “I almost want to say that the [artistic] genius of Adolf von Hildebrand has been inherited by his son, the author, as a philosophical genius.”
